GFI - The Quest

There comes a time in a girl's life when she wakes up and says..."What? When did this happen?" Somehow 45 years have blown past me and I'm ready for a big personal challenge. Read along as I offer my journey to tackle a triathlon, despite the public commitment scaring the bajeepers out of me. I'm thinking..."If I can do it...so can you."

Training Record

I realize that this is a record of what I actually do, but most training athletes plan out what they expect to do.  As I move on with my initial goals I will switch to planning, rather than record keeping.

Monday 1 November:  Today kicks off the Spinning 8WWL program and I want to participate.  This morning I rode my rode bike 50K (wind and rain didn't stop me!!!)  It was slow going - took about 2.5 hours.  I used my HRmonitor and rode mostly at about 140bpm.  Based on that, it said I burned 1240 calories. Alot of people are doubtful about those kinds of numbers.  Me?  I don't really care...I just like to compare today's to tomorrow's sort of thing.  I will add to this post a little later, with weight, tape measurements and photos to kick this off.

Saturday 30 October:  Endurance Spin Class.  only.  56 minutes low key riding.

Friday 29th October:  Kylie and I rode our bikes to Himawari and met Cole there who rode his motorcycle.  We took our swim training with Berry, the iron man.  This doesn't ad up to lots of laps, but it is exhausting for me anyway as I grapple with my real phobia of water...my effort to not think I'll drown translates in to big wasted movement in my body - so while the calorie expenditure is great, my fatigue is also way to high considering how much I thrash.  Like spinning, I am intellectually thinking that this training for technique shouldn't count for my fitness training, but I'll be counting it until I can fit more swim sessions in in a week.

Thursday 28th October:  Should have been a swimming day with kylie, but couldn't drag her out of bed.  My only exercise today, since the bedroom was being painted and I needed to supervise was my spinning class - and I tried to ride more in that than I usually do.

Wednesday  27 October:  I have done a few bike rides, I attempted to run once, which was really just a walk in the end and I have continued to teach a regular schedule of 5 spinning classes/week (though I have already declared that this doesn't count, so I continue on from here, out of my schlump.  Today I had my first coaching session for swimming.  I didn't do much in terms of building fitness for swimming, but I know with the development of my technique will come the ability to push my swimming fitness...so I'll count it here.

Wednesday 13 October:  What a week!  No exercise on Thursday 7th - canceled class due to sickness.  Then Friday through Monday I was traveling in China.  I taught a class on Tuesday night (power/strength) and rode it, but it is so interrupted that it really isn't a great workout for me.  Today I rode mtn bike with Laura - 60K at a nice easy pace, which was perfect for me about 15/16 mph or so.  Cool and cloudy weather was a god-send and I felt great.  I'll teach an endurance class tonight.

Wednesday 6th October:  No exercise planned for the day.  My fever broke, but I'm weak and sore.  I canceled all classes for the week now - heading to China on Friday....This will be big down time in my training, but I'm hopeful that I'll come back stronger for the rest.

Tuesday 5th October:  had a 102 fever plus vomiting....nothing planned for the next few days.  I don't exercise while sick...do you?

Monday 4th October:  Taught a hill climb spinning class - only exercise for the day.

Sunday 3 October:  Chuck and Kylie took the moto and followed me for a 27.8 mile ride.  I averaged about 15 mph, but since that factors in all the time gliding through the markets and slowing for cows crossing the road, I spent a lot of time at 18+mph...so that felt good.

Saturday 2 October:  Only a climb in Spinning®

Friday 1 October:  I rode 40 miles today.  My average is creeping up, so I'm pleased with that!

Thursday, 30 September:  YAY NO HEADACHE!  I felt really strong in the pool today but stuck with 500m.  I could have done more - even had the time to do it, but I got out, not wanting to over do it.  I also rode 30 miles, but it took me a long time - i was sluggish: recognizing the benefit of riding with others...

Wednesday 29 September:  I didn't go out riding with my pals - actually turned them down due to the continuing headache.  I did get a small spin in in the night class, but it was interval and I really can't work out then because I am so focused on timing everyone else.

Tuesday 28 Sept: I swam with Kylie's swim squad, but not very much - was too quick to get out, but still fighting a headache that wouldn't go away.  I got to spin with my night class, but didn't consider it much of a training session for me.

Monday 27 Sept - Running/Spinning.  I felt horrible and spent much of the day in a coma yesterday - today, I am sluggish, but I decided that 12 minutes is my minimum effort and to just do it, even if I just walked - and that was what I did, with the exception of a few bouts of chirunning...Spinning tonight, too, but I don't typically count my teaching in as part of my training.

Sunday 26 Sept  REST DAY - this is the first week I'll start recording what I do, so it is odd that the first thing I tell you is that I am doing NOTHING today...but last week I did a lot, so I am going to, rather counterintuitively, rest today.  It is Sunday, after all.
